Whether or not you are a fan of rock or the metal/nu-metal
genre, there is something for everyone when it comes to Slipknot. There is
screaming for those fans of harder stuff, but also singing for those who prefer
a more subtle style of rock. The music put out by the band has feeling, it has
energy, it has heavy guitar riffs, and it has heart pounding drums. It’s hard
not to get into a band like that. One minute you can be sitting quietly, but when a
Slipknot song comes on, you’d be hard pressed not to get up and start moshing
and head banging. Slipknot's live show only leaves you wanting more.
I was never really a huge fan of the band or the metal genre before my first
live Slipknot experience, but let me tell you, after seeing it I was hooked.
Fresh off their latest album release, “.5: The Gray Chapter”, the band hit the
road to promote the record. The band
took the stage in front of an arena full of eager fans. The lights shut off and
the crowd began to scream. A large blue curtain shrouding the stage, the song XIX begins to play. As the song ends the
curtain rises to the sky and the band reveals themselves.
The stage is adorned
with a huge demonic looking goat head with the body of what resembles a worm
hole. The 9 disturbingly looking masked members begin to play, opening with new
song “Sarcastrophe” followed by the ever popular and fan favorite “The Heretic
Anthem.” Me personally, am not usually one for a ton of theatrics, but these
guys get it. Between an extravagant stage setup with crazy visuals/pyrotechnics
and masks that look like products of a horror movie, the performance is one to
behold. The band has tons of energy and charisma. Front man Corey Taylor is
seen constantly head banging and running back and forth across the stage. Guitarist
Mick Thompson (#7) headbangs and stares menacingly at fans through his full
faced Hannibal Lechter type mask. Drummers Chris Fehn (#3) and Michael Shawn
Crahan (#6) are carried into the air on massive drum sets atop hydraulics,
taking them up and down and spinning them a full 360 degrees. Turntablist Sid
Wilson runs around stage climbing and jumping off whatever he can.
The whole
show not only keeps you rocking but also stimulated the entire set through. After
an incredible 14 song set the band left the stage. The chants for an encore
filled the arena. To the delight of the fans, they got exactly that. The band
returned to the stage for three more songs finishing with “Sic”, “Surfacing”, and exiting to a recording of “Til We Die” as the band gave
their farewell to the crowd. The show was great, the crowd was great, and the atmosphere
was great. Slipknot is a show I’ve seen many times before and will continue to
go see far into the future. A highly recommended show.
